Warsaw University (Uniwersytet Warszawsk or UW) is the largest, most respected, and most prestigious university in Poland. The xain campus of the University of Warsaw can be found in the centre of Warsaw at Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street in the Old Town area. It offers local and international education and training to all interested students from all over the world.
When it was established in 1816, Warsaw University already had two faculties that existed earlier as separate schools. Starting in 1831, the university was shut down by Russian authorities for more than 20 years. It was not able to perform as an institution of higher education in Poland from 1857 to 1869. During the Polish uprising from 1863 to 1864, its name was replaced by the Russian Imperial Warsaw University. It used its original name and served as a Polish university again when it reopened in 1915. The university was closed again in 1939, this time by the Nazi authorities. However, scholars and educators continued their training, research, and academic activities illegally. The university resumed operation in 1945 after the series of world wars.
Today, Warsaw University continues to excel in academic training and research. The repression and other societal challenges it had experienced made it more credible and popular with many scholars and students. The university presently has more than 55,000 students.

Warsaw University hosts several modern facilities like the University Library, computer facilities and the auditorium.
The University Library is one of the libraries in Poland that offers the largest collection of academic and recreational books, and domestic and foreign works from various disciplines. It is the largest library in the country that contains works in particular disciplines such as Archaeology, Biology, Education, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. It functions as a research centre and a public library. The library also collects studies that have been researched and taught at the university in the fields of the humanities and social sciences.
Most of the classrooms in the university are equipped with state-of-the-art computers with Internet connection. All regular students are allowed to use them according to the university rules and guidelines.
The Auditorium Maximum is a large lecture hall that can accommodate hundreds of students. Most live performances, seminars, meetings, orientations, and general assemblies are held here.
